There is no denying the basic fact – there is an epidemic of cancer in the fire service. Moreover, it is either already occurring in most urban, suburban and even rural departments in the world or, those firefighters have heard of this hidden danger, even if no one in their department has been diagnosed…yet! However, like many other health issues from a pulled back muscle to high blood pressure, firefighters are a tough breed who will rarely discloses these conditions to anyone else, even their spouse or significant other! Why? Because of ego and allowing that ego to get in the way of better judgement can lead to a negative situation for both the firefighter and his/her department!
This presentation presents covers how firefighting has evolved in the last forty years or so and how this evolution has changed everything from what is burning to the type of bunker-gear we wear to methods of extinguishment.
With that said, now more than ever, when firefighters allow personal feelings to obstruct innovations and changes created to ensure a safer environment for their job, the results can be and too often are catastrophic.
Included in this presentation are issues regarding ego, overall firefighter health, fitness for duty and the pervasiveness of cancer in the fire service.
Also included is a break-out session where the members will evaluate scenarios and return to discuss their suggested remediation, in light of what was discussed in the lecture.
